How to Overcome Sin

Living in identity with the things of Jesus Christ

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10

Sermon · approx. 12 minutes

Introduction: A New Life in Christ

We all know the reality of temptation and sin. Sometimes we struggle with habits, thoughts, or reactions that do not reflect the life we want to live before God. But the message of the Gospel is not simply that we must try harder: we are called to draw near to Jesus Christ and allow His life to transform ours.

Victory begins when we stop placing sin at the centre of our attention and fix our eyes on Christ. As we learn to love what He loves, obey His Word, and walk with the Holy Spirit, our decisions and desires begin to change.

Central idea: we overcome the power of sin by staying close to Jesus, living according to His Word, and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us day by day.

1. Fix our eyes on Christ

Colossians 3:1: seek the things above, where Christ is.

We cannot continually feed what draws us away from God and expect to grow in freedom. We must direct our minds, attention, and desires towards the things that please the Lord.

Warning: what we feed in our hearts influences our decisions.

2. Do what pleases Jesus

John 14:23: whoever loves Jesus keeps His word, and the Father and the Son will make their home with that person.

Obedience is not a way to buy God’s love; it is a loving response to the One who loved us first. As we obey, we learn to recognise His guidance and live closer to Him.

Question: What specific decision can I make today to please Jesus?

3. Live in ongoing fellowship

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit call us into a living relationship with God. The Spirit strengthens us, reminds us of the truth, and produces a new character in us.

In this way, an atmosphere of trust, peace, and security in God develops, even when the circumstances around us are difficult.

Key truth: we do not walk alone; we depend on God’s presence and help.

4. Experience abundant life

John 10:10: Jesus came so that we may have life abundantly.

Abundant life does not mean we will never have problems. It means living with purpose, hope, and a relationship with God that transforms our priorities. Our lives can become more fruitful because we no longer live only for ourselves.

5. Share what we have received

When we experience God’s love, we develop a desire to share it. We serve, listen, forgive, and encourage others—not to appear holy, but as the fruit of a life being transformed.

God’s love directs us towards people and moves us to demonstrate through our actions the hope we have found in Christ.

6. Sin no longer has to control us

Holiness does not mean temptation will never return or that we will never make mistakes. It means that we belong to God and that, by His grace, we can resist sin, repent when we fall, and walk with Him again.

Sin may try to draw our attention, but we do not have to obey it or allow it to govern our decisions. In Christ we find forgiveness, help, and strength to keep going.

Reminder: Christian victory does not depend on human strength alone, but on remaining in Christ and responding to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion

Brothers and sisters, overcoming sin is not simply about trying to avoid what is wrong. It means drawing so close to Jesus that we learn to love what He loves, think according to His Word, and remain attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Let us fix our eyes on the things above. Let us do what pleases the Lord. Let us cultivate daily fellowship with God and share with others the love we have received. May our lives show that sin is no longer our master: we belong to Jesus Christ and, by His grace, we can walk in holiness and freedom.

Colossians 3:1–2 · Seeking the things above

“Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Teaching: directing our attention towards Christ changes what we value and how we make decisions. This does not mean ignoring our daily responsibilities, but living them with a God-centred perspective.

Go deeper
  • What occupies most of my thoughts and time?
  • What habit could help nurture my faith?
  • What do I need to stop feeding because it draws me away from God?

John 14:21–23 · Loving Him and keeping His word

Jesus connects love for Him with keeping His commandments, and promises the fellowship of the Father and the Son to those who love Him.

Teaching: obedience grows out of a relationship of love. We do not obey to make God love us; we obey because we have received His love and want to honour Him.

What does this look like in practice?

Forgiving, speaking truthfully, acting with humility, rejecting what we know is harmful, serving our neighbour, and seeking God in prayer are everyday ways to respond to Jesus.

John 10:10 · Abundant life

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Teaching: Jesus offers a life reconciled to God, full of purpose and guided by His truth. Abundance is not a promise of constant comfort, but a life that finds its source and hope in Him.

Holiness: belonging to God

Holiness is a life set apart for God and transformed by His grace. It is not boasting of perfection or condemning others; it is learning to obey, confess sin, receive forgiveness, and continue growing in the character of Christ.

Pause and reflect

Questions for personal reflection

Where am I fixing my eyes?

Identify the influences, habits, or thoughts that are shaping your heart. Are they bringing you closer to Christ or distracting you from Him?

What does it mean to please Jesus in my daily life?

Think of a relationship, conversation, or decision in which you could act with greater honesty, patience, humility, or love.

Am I trying to fight alone?

Prayer, Scripture, and the company of mature believers can help you persevere. Asking for support is not a sign of defeat, but a step of humility.

How can my life share God’s love?

Consider one concrete action: listen to someone, help without expecting a reward, ask for forgiveness, or share a word of hope.

Phrase to remember: “Do not feed what draws you away from Christ; nurture your fellowship with the One who gives you life.”

Practical plan for each day

Tick each step as you practise it. The goal is not to complete a list mechanically, but to develop an ongoing relationship with God.

When temptation comes

  1. Stop and recognise what is happening.
  2. Pray and remember the truth of the Word.
  3. Step away from the situation if necessary.
  4. Seek support and choose a response that honours Christ.

When you have fallen

  1. Do not hide or justify the sin.
  2. Confess honestly to God and receive His forgiveness.
  3. Make amends where appropriate.
  4. Learn from what happened and keep walking with Jesus.

Sharing what we have received

A transformed life becomes an invitation to others. We share the Gospel not as people who never struggle, but as people who have found grace, hope, and direction in Jesus Christ.

Through our words

Speak humbly about what Christ is doing in our lives.

Through our actions

Serve, forgive, listen, and act with integrity.

Through our community

Encourage one another to grow in faith and persevere.

Question for the group: Whom can you encourage this week with a word, a prayer, or practical help?
Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, help me walk in Your freedom

Lord Jesus, today I acknowledge that I need You to overcome sin. Help me fix my eyes on the things above, do what pleases You, and allow Your Holy Spirit to transform my heart.

Father, thank You that You do not call me to walk alone. Teach me to live in fellowship with You, to obey Your Word out of love, and to trust in Your presence each day. When temptation comes, give me the wisdom to turn away from what harms me and the strength to choose what is good. If I fail, help me repent sincerely, receive Your forgiveness, and walk with You again.

May Your love produce in me an abundant life, full of purpose, peace, and service. Use me to share with others the hope I have received. May sin not rule my life; instead, may I live to honour You in holiness and love. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
