Introduction Welcome
Welcome everyone. It is a blessing to have each one of you here today. Thank you for taking the time to seek God's presence. Today's message is entitled: "Are You A Leader?" At first, this sounds like a question for pastors, managers, business owners or politicians. But God's Word teaches that every single believer is called to lead—beginning with leading themselves. Leadership is not first about position. It is about direction. It is about influence. It is about choosing every day to walk with Jesus Christ. Before we can influence anyone else, we must allow God to transform our own hearts. Today we will discover that true leadership begins when Christ becomes the Lord of our lives.
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Everything begins with the condition of our heart. A leader who walks with God becomes a blessing wherever they go.
You Are The First
The first person you are called to lead... is yourself. Before Moses led Israel... God first prepared Moses. Before David became king... God shaped David's heart. Before the disciples preached to the nations... Jesus first transformed their lives. God always works from the inside before He works through us. The greatest victory you will ever experience is not conquering another person— it is allowing Christ to rule your own life. Every decision you make... Every thought you entertain... Every word you speak... Every action you choose... reveals who is leading your life.
"Then He said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.'"
Jesus never called people to simply admire Him. He called them to follow Him. Following Christ means allowing Him to direct every part of our lives.
"But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
Joshua made a personal decision before asking others to do the same. That is true leadership. Leadership always begins with a choice. Today we must ask ourselves: Who is leading my life? Am I following Christ... or am I following the world?
Reflection
Before continuing... take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself honestly: • Who influences my decisions? • What controls my thoughts? • What directs my priorities? • Am I becoming more like Jesus each day? God is not looking for perfect people. He is looking for willing hearts. When we surrender ourselves to Him, He begins transforming us into the leaders He created us to be.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is— His good, pleasing and perfect will."
Real leadership begins when our minds are renewed by God's Word. The Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out, preparing us to become lights in a dark world.
The Danger of Idolatry
Now that we understand that leadership begins with ourselves, we must ask another important question: Who—or what—is sitting on the throne of my heart? The Bible calls anything that takes God's rightful place in our lives an idol. Many people think of idols as carved statues, but idolatry is much broader than that. Anything we value more than God can become an idol—money, success, popularity, possessions, pleasure, pride, even our own opinions. When these things become our highest priority, they begin to direct our decisions. Instead of following Christ, we end up following whatever promises temporary satisfaction. God does not warn us about idolatry because He wants to restrict us. He warns us because He loves us. He knows that anything we worship instead of Him will eventually disappoint us and leave us empty.
"You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God."
The Lord desires our complete devotion. He alone is worthy of our worship because He alone is our Creator, our Savior, and our Redeemer.
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Notice the order in this verse. Jesus says to seek God's Kingdom first—not second, not when it is convenient, but first. When Christ is first, everything else finds its proper place.
The Consequences of Sin and Crime
When people turn away from God, the results affect not only individuals but entire families, communities, and nations. We see violence, hatred, corruption, theft, abuse, and injustice. These are not simply social problems—they are evidence of the brokenness that sin brings into the world. Sin promises freedom, but it produces slavery. It promises happiness, but it leaves guilt and pain. It promises life, but it leads to death. Crime destroys trust. It wounds innocent people. It damages communities. Above all, it separates humanity from God's perfect design. This is why the Gospel is so important. Jesus did not come merely to improve behavior—He came to transform hearts.
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
The wages of sin are earned, but eternal life is a gift. We cannot purchase God's grace. We receive it by faith through Jesus Christ.
"But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."
Sin usually begins as a small compromise. If left unchecked, it grows and produces destruction. That is why we must guard our hearts daily and remain close to Christ.
Application
Today, take a moment to examine your own heart. Ask yourself:
- Is there anything I value more than my relationship with God?
- Have I allowed success, money, pride, or comfort to become my master?
- Am I leading others toward Christ by the way I live?
- Do my words and actions reflect God's love?
- Am I willing to surrender everything to Jesus?
Leadership is not measured by titles, positions, or achievements. True leadership is measured by obedience. When Christ is the Lord of our hearts, our lives become a testimony to His grace.
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
God's Word provides the direction we need. A leader who walks in God's truth becomes a light for others.
Jesus the Saviour – Leading Through Grace
After seeing the reality of sin and its consequences, we arrive at the greatest news ever given to humanity. God did not leave us without hope. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us. Jesus did not come merely to teach us how to live. He came to rescue us from sin, restore our relationship with the Father, and give us eternal life. The greatest leader who ever walked this earth was not a king seated upon a throne. He was a Servant who washed the feet of His disciples, healed the broken, forgave sinners, and willingly gave His own life upon the cross. True leadership is not about being served. It is about serving others with love, humility, and compassion.
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
Jesus demonstrated that the strongest leader is the one who serves. His grace gives us the strength to forgive, to love, to persevere, and to remain faithful.
"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
Jesus is not one option among many. He is the only way to reconciliation with God. When we follow Him, we discover true freedom—not freedom to sin, but freedom from the power of sin.
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"
The Mountain Top – Growing Closer to God
Every great servant of God experienced moments of meeting Him in special places. Moses met God on Mount Sinai. Elijah heard God's gentle voice on the mountain. Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray. The mountain top represents those moments when we intentionally draw near to God. It is a place of prayer. A place of worship. A place of surrender. A place where faith becomes stronger than fear. We cannot remain spiritually healthy if we never spend time in God's presence. The higher we climb with Christ, the clearer His voice becomes.
"Come near to God and He will come near to you."
God is always ready to receive those who seek Him with sincere hearts. The mountain top is not about geography. It is about relationship.
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Whatever challenges you face today, remember that Christ provides the strength you need. A true leader depends upon God's power rather than personal ability.
Let Us Lead in the Spirit
As we come to the end of today's message, let us remember that leadership begins with surrender. God is calling each one of us to become an example in our homes, our workplaces, our churches, and our communities. People are watching how we live. They may never read a Bible, but they will read our lives. Let your words bring hope. Let your actions reflect kindness. Let your decisions honour Christ. When Jesus leads our hearts, we naturally become leaders who bless others. Do not be afraid to stand for truth. Do not be ashamed of the Gospel. Walk in faith. Walk in love. Walk in obedience. And let Christ shine through you every day.
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Leadership is not about drawing attention to ourselves. It is about pointing people toward Jesus Christ.
"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Invitation and Closing Prayer
If you have never fully surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, today is the perfect opportunity. The Bible tells us that salvation is available to everyone who believes in Him. God is not looking for perfection. He is looking for a willing heart. If you desire to follow Jesus, you can pray this simple prayer:
"Heavenly Father, I thank You for loving me. I confess that I am a sinner, and I ask You to forgive me. I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins and rose again to give me new life. Today I surrender my heart to You. Lead me by Your Holy Spirit. Help me to become the person You created me to be. Teach me to lead by serving others with love and humility. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
